The 4th grade class at St. Augustin’s Catholic School recently presented the Des Moines Area Religious Council's Emergency Food Pantry Director with a check for over $2,000. What a beautiful demonstration of caring and giving.
These industrious 4th grade students raised the money by organizing what they termed a Penny War. The idea: collect change to be donated to the DMARC Emergency Food Pantry.
The students made posters for all the classrooms at St. Augustin along with posters for the hallways. Each day for one week the 29 members of the 4th grade class collected and counted the incoming money on a daily basis, all the while encouraging other students to donate. The truly remarkable thing is that these youngsters raised $2,047.13 in change in just one week!
What a tremendous effort by these kids! It is heartwarming to see young citizens like those in the 4th grade class at St. Augustine’s Catholic School because we know that they will all grow into caring adults one day who will be valued members of their community.
